Stage IV Productions’ touring musical rendition of THUMBELINA delighted an audience of young girls and their parents this Saturday at the Kelsey Theatre.

Produced in 1983 (and released the following year), as part of Shelley Duvall's charming live-action "Faerie Tale Theatre", the narrative is told with good humour, imagination, and a great sense of fun.

Thumbelina is a child of the flowers who is just the size of a thumb.

It was first translated into English by Mary Howitt in 1846, from "Tommelise", written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, and published as one of a series of seven fairy tales in 1835. "Thumbelina" is a fantastic retelling of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, "Little Thumb". For four years now, Danville’s Scarlet Cup Theater has put on unique performances in unique places that were never designed to be a stage.

Imagination Stage’s fresh take on this story encapsulates much of Andersen’s original plot, with Thumbelina (the vibrant Unissa Cruse) the centerpiece of a whirlwind journey from her human-sized parent, Old Lady, who raised her, to various ill-fitting locales until she finds where she belongs. Thumbelina is sad as sad can be about her one true love being dead and not ever seeing her mother again and there he is! On her path she meets lots of different friends who name her Thumbelina.
