Rayon is a natural-based material that is made from the cellulose obtained from wood pulp or cotton. This is because the cellulose from which rayon is originally derived is a natural fiber, but rayon requires extensive synthetic processing to be done to the cellulose in its production. The cellulose is extracted from wood or cotton pulp, although wood pulp is most common. Because rayon fibers are made from tree and plant pulp, companies now market rayon as natural fibers. The different types of rayon include viscose, modal and lyocell. Yes, rayon is any type of synthetic or semi-synthetic fiber (depending on who you ask) that is made from cellulose. It’s a low-cost and convenient fibre to work with and lends itself to diverse uses. But, rayon natural fiber is just more greenwashing. Rayon is neither an entirely natural fiber nor an entirely synthetic one. These fibers are heavily processed with extremely toxic chemicals.
